There are many types of chicken coop kits out on the marketplace today, but how do you know which one to choose, especially if you’ve never bought, or built one? There are definitely a few things to look for that should set a quality kit above the rest.
Tip #1 Easy Cleaning, Easy Maintenance
One of the most important parts of owning a chicken coop, is the fact that you need to clean and maintain it properly. Faulty designs and poor craftmanship can really make your life, and your chicken’s lives difficult. Be sure to look for these things:
Check to see if the floor of the coop is slightly sloped. A good chicken coop’s floor will always be slightly sloped downward toward the main door. This makes it extremely easy to hose out the chicken coop, because the water will run out of the coop, instead of puddling in the center.
Tip #2 Proper Ventilation
A good chicken coop will provide the necessary air ventilation quality to your chickens. Invest in some sliding windows, and maybe even a door. This should provide the ventilation needed to properly care for the chickens being housed.
Tip #3 Thick Wire Mesh
If the door has a wire mesh protectant, be sure that it is up to snuff. Even small animals can chew through higher gauge wire mesh. Keep your chickens safe by investing in a proper door to keep pesky predators at bay.
Tip #4 Proper Lighting
Your chicken coop kit should provide adequate lighting, usually in the form of an electric light. Not only will this provide light, should you or the chickens need it – it is also a good heat source in the colder seasons.
